Tomato Market Size in Central Asia

The Central Asian tomato market shrank to $X in 2022, falling by -4.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a slight slump. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Tomato Production in Central Asia

In value terms, tomato production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production recorded a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Uzbekistan (X tons) remains the largest tomato producing country in Central Asia, comprising approx. 52% of total volume. Moreover, tomato production in Uzbekistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Kazakhstan (X tons), threefold. Tajikistan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 13% share.

In Uzbekistan, tomato production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Kazakhstan (+2.1% per year) and Tajikistan (+3.8% per year).

In 2022, the average yield of tomatoes in Central Asia dropped modestly to X tons per ha, which is down by -2.3% against the previous year. In general, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 5.9%. Over the period under review, the tomato yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The tomato harvested area shrank slightly to X ha in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 2.9%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

Exports in Central Asia

In 2022, overseas shipments of tomatoes increased by 2.7% to X tons, rising for the sixth year in a row after four years of decline. Overall, exports posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 1,358% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, tomato exports dropped slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 1,320%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Uzbekistan (X tons) was the main exporter of tomatoes, comprising 56% of total exports. Turkmenistan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 27% share, followed by Kazakhstan (13%). Kyrgyzstan (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to tomato exports from Uzbekistan stood at +8.0%. At the same time, Turkmenistan (+32.2%) and Kazakhstan (+10.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkmenistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +32.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kyrgyzstan (-10.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+56 p.p.) and Turkmenistan (+17 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Kazakhstan (-15.3 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (-58 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest tomato supplying countries in Central Asia were Uzbekistan ($X), Turkmenistan ($X) and Kazakhstan ($X), with a combined 99% share of total exports.

Turkmenistan, with a CAGR of +40.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, waning by -4.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 41%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkmenistan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkmenistan (+6.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, purchases abroad of tomatoes increased by 27% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 128% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, tomato imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 135%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan was the key importer of tomatoes in Central Asia, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 74% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons), achieving a 25% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to tomato imports into Kazakhstan stood at +17.8%. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+50.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +50.2% from 2012-2022. While the share of Kyrgyzstan (+22 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Kazakhstan (-14.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tomatoes in Central Asia, comprising 81% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 17% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Kazakhstan totaled +16.3%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, declining by -9.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 17% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
