In 2021, the Central Asian toothpaste market increased by 4.4% to $X, rising for the fifth year in a row after three years of decline. In general, consumption, however, recorded a strong expansion. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, toothpaste production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 254% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Toothpaste exports dropped significantly to X tons in 2021, falling by -18.4% on 2020 figures. In general, exports showed a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 227% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, toothpaste exports reduced rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 204% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Kazakhstan (X tons) was the main exporter of toothpaste, denture cleaners and other dentifrices, committing 70% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), achieving a 24% share of total exports. Tajikistan (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Kazakhstan decreased at an average annual rate of -13.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+18.9%) and Tajikistan (+5.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +18.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kyrgyzstan (-16.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+24 p.p.) and Tajikistan (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Kyrgyzstan (-2 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (-24.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest toothpaste supplier in Central Asia, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Tajikistan, with a 6.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Kazakhstan stood at -18.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uzbekistan (+36.6% per year) and Tajikistan (+3.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -12.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 24% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Overall, imports, however, showed prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 100% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

In value terms, toothpaste imports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +32.8% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 45% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 51% of total imports. Uzbekistan (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Mongolia (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons), Tajikistan (X tons) and Turkmenistan (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 49% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to toothpaste imports into Kazakhstan stood at +4.8%. At the same time, Tajikistan (+15.2%), Mongolia (+12.1%), Turkmenistan (+8.8%) and Kyrgyzstan (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tajikistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +15.2% from 2012-2021. Uzbekistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Uzbekistan (+24 p.p.), Tajikistan (+2.1 p.p.) and Mongolia (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Kyrgyzstan (-5.5 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (-22.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Mongolia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 84% share of total imports.

Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +15.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 13% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Mongolia ($X per ton) and Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) and Tajikistan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
