In 2021, overseas shipments of trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene (perchloroethylene) increased by 14% to X tons, rising for the seventh consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, recorded a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 75% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 100% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

The shipments of the one major exporters of trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene (perchloroethylene), namely Kazakhstan, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene (perchloroethylene) exports, with a CAGR of -4.3% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 14% against the previous year. Overall, the export price posted a modest increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Kazakhstan.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Kazakhstan amounted to +1.4% per year.

In 2021, approx. X tons of trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene (perchloroethylene) were imported in Central Asia; which is down by -12.6% on 2020. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 157% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene imports fell to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 231% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan prevails in imports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 79% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Mongolia (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons), together mixing up a 14% share of total imports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Turkmenistan (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene (perchloroethylene) imports, with a CAGR of +19.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mongolia (+12.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Kyrgyzstan (-1.7%), Uzbekistan (-11.6%) and Turkmenistan (-11.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kazakhstan (+31 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+6.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Kyrgyzstan (-9 p.p.) and Turkmenistan (-28.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene (perchloroethylene) in Central Asia, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mongolia ($X), with a 7.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 6.6% share.

In Kazakhstan, trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene imports expanded at an average annual rate of +13.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mongolia (+7.4% per year) and Uzbekistan (-27.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 8.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 29%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Turkmenistan ($X per ton) and Mongolia ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) and Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkmenistan (+0.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
