After four years of growth, the Central Asian preserved tuna market decreased by -8.3% to $X in 2021. Tajikistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the tuna (prepared or preserved) exports, with a CAGR of +10.6% from 2012 to 2021. While the share of Tajikistan (+4.1 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Tajikistan ($X) also remains the largest preserved tuna supplier in Central Asia.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 7.3% against the previous year. Export price indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +10.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, preserved tuna export price increased by +21.4% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 60%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Tajikistan.

Imports in Central Asia

In 2021, the amount of tuna (prepared or preserved) imported in Central Asia rose slightly to X tons, increasing by 3.2% against 2020 figures. In general, imports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 54%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, preserved tuna imports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 57%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In 2021, Mongolia (X tons) was the key importer of tuna (prepared or preserved), committing 52% of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons) and Turkmenistan (X tons). All these countries together held near 45% share of total imports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +55.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, Mongolia ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Uzbekistan ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 94% of total imports.

Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +68.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 7.1% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 33%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+8.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
