In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of twine, cordage, rope and cables, when their volume decreased by -52.6% to X tons. In general, exports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 122%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

In value terms, twine and cordage exports fell remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 123%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Uzbekistan was the major exporter of twine, cordage, rope and cables in Central Asia, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 76% of total exports in 2021. Turkmenistan (X tons) took a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Kazakhstan (8.7%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to twine and cordage exports from Uzbekistan stood at +14.1%. At the same time, Turkmenistan (+72.9%) and Kazakhstan (+18.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkmenistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +72.9% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Turkmenistan increased by +15 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Imports in Central Asia

In 2021, approx. X tons of twine, cordage, rope and cables were imported in Central Asia; increasing by 11% compared with the previous year. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by +0.0% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to twine and cordage imports into Kazakhstan stood at +6.0%. At the same time, Mongolia (+18.2%), Kyrgyzstan (+10.3%) and Turkmenistan (+8.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mongolia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +18.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tajikistan (-6.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Mongolia and Kyrgyzstan increased by +8.1 and +4.9 percentage points, respectively. In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported twine, cordage, rope and cables in Central Asia, comprising 61% of total imports.
