The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 848%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-alloy steel u-section exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 648% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 91% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), making up an 8.7% share of total exports.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the u-sections of non-alloy steel exports, with a CAGR of +35.7% from 2012 to 2022. Uzbekistan (-32.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Kazakhstan (+77 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+8.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest non-alloy steel u-section supplier in Central Asia, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 5.3% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Kazakhstan stood at +59.0%.

In 2022, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 16% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. In 2022, the amount of u-sections of non-alloy steel imported in Central Asia dropped to X tons, declining by -10.5% compared with 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 31%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-alloy steel u-section imports totaled $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 80%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Kazakhstan (X tons) was the key importer of u-sections of non-alloy steel, creating 66% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), making up a 23% share of total imports. Mongolia (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Tajikistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Kazakhstan decreased at an average annual rate of -4.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+6.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +6.5% from 2012-2022. Mongolia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tajikistan (-1.8%) and Kyrgyzstan (-5.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Uzbekistan increased by +23 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported u-sections of non-alloy steel in Central Asia, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with a 4.1% share.

In Kazakhstan, non-alloy steel u-section imports contracted by an average annual rate of -1.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uzbekistan (+8.9% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (-4.8% per year).

Import price indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade.
