Exports in Central Asia

After two years of decline, overseas shipments of graphic paper with mechanical fibre content under 10% and of weight under X g/m² decreased by -89.9% to X kg in 2020. Overall, exports recorded a dramatic slump. The volume of export peaked at X kg in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2020, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, exports of graphic paper with mechanical fibre content under 10% and of weight under X g/m² contracted significantly to $X in 2020. In general, exports saw a significant curtailment. Over the period under review, the exports of reached the peak figure at $X in 2019, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

The biggest shipments were from Kazakhstan (X kg), together recording 100% of total export.

Imports in Central Asia

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of graphic paper with mechanical fibre content under 10% and of weight under X g/m², when their volume increased by 47% to X tons. In general, imports saw prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 275% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, imports of graphic paper with mechanical fibre content under 10% and of weight under X g/m² surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 301%. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Uzbekistan represented the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 55% of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 26% share, followed by Turkmenistan (11%) and Tajikistan (7.1%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to graphic paper with mechanical fibre content under 10% and of weight under X g/m² imports into Uzbekistan stood at +9.1%. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+27.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +27.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Turkmenistan (-2.9%) and Tajikistan (-18.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Uzbekistan (+55 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+22 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Turkmenistan and Tajikistan saw its share reduced by -11.2% and -60.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Turkmenistan ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 98% of total imports.

Kazakhstan, with a CAGR of +48.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -5.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 34% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+16.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
