Copper Market Size in Central Asia

The Central Asian copper market totaled $X in 2022, picking up by 4.9% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. Over the period under review, exports showed a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 279%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, copper exports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 296%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

The shipments of the one major exporters of copper, namely Kazakhstan, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the copper exports, with a CAGR of -19.9% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) also remains the largest copper supplier in Central Asia.

In Kazakhstan, copper exports shrank by an average annual rate of -16.8% over the period from 2012-2022.

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -11.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a temperate expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Kazakhstan.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Kazakhstan amounted to +3.8% per year.

Imports in Central Asia

Copper imports surged to X tons in 2022, jumping by 475% compared with the previous year. In general, imports showed a strong expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, copper imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 151% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 97% of total imports in 2022. Turkmenistan (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the copper imports, with a CAGR of +29.5% from 2012 to 2022. Turkmenistan (-15.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported copper in Central Asia, comprising 93% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkmenistan ($X), with a 5.1% share of total imports.

In Kazakhstan, copper imports expanded at an average annual rate of +19.8% over the period from 2012-2022.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -67.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 116% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkmenistan ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan amounted to $X per ton.
