Vaccine Market Size in Central Asia

In 2022, the Central Asian vaccine market decreased by -22.8% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, vaccine production declined markedly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 123% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

Exports in Central Asia

In 2022, approx. X kg of vaccines for human medicine were exported in Central Asia; with a decrease of -5.3% compared with 2021 figures. In general, exports continue to indicate a sharp downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 5,490% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, vaccine exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a sharp decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 674% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Kazakhstan (X kg) represented the largest exporter of vaccines for human medicine in Central Asia, making up 100% of total export.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the vaccines for human medicine exports, with a CAGR of -26.2% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of Kazakhstan (+7.9 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) also remains the largest vaccine supplier in Central Asia.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kazakhstan amounted to -19.9%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per kg, waning by -3.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 802% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per kg. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Kazakhstan.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Kazakhstan amounted to +8.5% per year.

Imports in Central Asia

In 2022, supplies from abroad of vaccines for human medicine decreased by -35.2% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a measured expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 56% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, vaccine imports fell sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 225% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan was the main importer of vaccines for human medicine in Central Asia, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 40% of total imports in 2022. Uzbekistan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 19% share, followed by Turkmenistan (17%), Tajikistan (12%) and Kyrgyzstan (7.8%). Mongolia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of vaccines for human medicine. At the same time, Turkmenistan (+13.5%), Tajikistan (+11.7%), Uzbekistan (+10.5%) and Kyrgyzstan (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkmenistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +13.5% from 2012-2022. Mongolia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Turkmenistan (+10 p.p.), Uzbekistan (+8.6 p.p.) and Tajikistan (+6.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -23.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest vaccine importing markets in Central Asia were Kazakhstan ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Turkmenistan ($X), together comprising 84% of total imports.

Turkmenistan, with a CAGR of +37.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -30.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 109%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkmenistan (+21.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
