After two years of growth, the Central Asian market for spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages decreased by -12.5% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, production of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages contracted slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by +0.6% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Central Asia
In 2022, shipments abroad of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages increased by 43% to X litres, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports posted buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 112% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, exports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 117%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Kazakhstan (X litres), Mongolia (X litres) and Kyrgyzstan (X litres) was the largest exporter of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages in Central Asia, creating 96% of total export. Uzbekistan (X litres) held a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Kyrgyzstan (with a CAGR of +37.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages supplying countries in Central Asia were Kyrgyzstan ($X), Mongolia ($X) and Kazakhstan ($X), together accounting for 96% of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, Kyrgyzstan, with a CAGR of +50.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per litre, surging by 4.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 143% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per litre), while Kazakhstan ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (+9.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Spirits, Liqueurs And Other Spirituous Beverages
Imports in Central Asia
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages, when their volume decreased by -26.4% to X litres. In general, imports continue to indicate a pronounced setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at X litres in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, imports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages shrank significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a pronounced descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Kazakhstan prevails in beverages structure, recording X litres, which was approx. 73% of total imports in 2022. Mongolia (X litres) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Turkmenistan (X litres) and Kyrgyzstan (X litres). All these countries together held near 22% share of total imports. Tajikistan (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Kazakhstan decreased at an average annual rate of -3.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Turkmenistan (+34.5%), Mongolia (+15.9%) and Tajikistan (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkmenistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +34.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kyrgyzstan (-15.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mongolia (+7.7 p.p.) and Turkmenistan (+7.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan saw its share reduced by -3.6% and -14.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages in Central Asia, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mongolia ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Tajikistan, with a 7.4% share.
In Kazakhstan, imports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages decreased by an average annual rate of -6.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mongolia (+10.3% per year) and Tajikistan (+15.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per litre in 2022, increasing by 9.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 13% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tajikistan ($X per litre), while Turkmenistan ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
