Exports in Central Asia
In 2021, waffle and wafer exports in Central Asia contracted remarkably to X tons, reducing by -19% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 96%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then declined significantly in the following year.
In value terms, waffle and wafer exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 114% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Kazakhstan prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 96% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - Uzbekistan (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons) - each finished at a 4% share of total exports.
Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the waffles and wafers exports, with a CAGR of +14.4% from 2012 to 2021. Kyrgyzstan (-9.4%) and Uzbekistan (-33.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Kazakhstan (+11 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Kyrgyzstan saw its share reduced by -11.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest waffle and wafer supplier in Central Asia, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 14% share of total exports.
In Kazakhstan, waffle and wafer exports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uzbekistan (+21.3% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (-11.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 41% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable downturn. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+82.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Waffle And Wafer Imports
Imports in Central Asia
For the fifth consecutive year, Central Asia recorded growth in overseas purchases of waffles and wafers, which increased by 3% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +73.0% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 29%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, waffle and wafer imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +76.8% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Kazakhstan represented the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 46% of total imports. Mongolia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Tajikistan (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 52% share of total imports. Turkmenistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+20.9%), Tajikistan (+11.7%), Mongolia (+11.6%) and Kyrgyzstan (+9.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +20.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Turkmenistan (-8.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mongolia (+6.3 p.p.), Tajikistan (+5.3 p.p.), Uzbekistan (+5.1 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (+3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -6.5% and -13.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported waffles and wafers in Central Asia, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mongolia ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Kazakhstan totaled +1.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mongolia (+10.2% per year) and Uzbekistan (+51.6% per year).

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a slight decrease.
