Exports in Central Asia

In 2021, approx. X tons of wallpaper and wall coverings were exported in Central Asia; picking up by 96% on the previous year. In general, exports posted a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 188% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, wallpaper exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 166% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Uzbekistan dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 90% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons), achieving a 5.3% share of total exports. Kazakhstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Uzbekistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wallpaper and wall coverings exports, with a CAGR of +492.4% from 2012 to 2021. Kyrgyzstan (-7.6%) and Kazakhstan (-19.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+90 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Kyrgyzstan (-20.6 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (-68.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) remains the largest wallpaper supplier in Central Asia, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 6.2% share of total exports.

In Uzbekistan, wallpaper exports increased at an average annual rate of +638.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kyrgyzstan (-6.8% per year) and Kazakhstan (-15.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. Export price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, wallpaper export price increased by +2.3% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 88% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+24.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Central Asia

In 2021, supplies from abroad of wallpaper and wall coverings increased by 23% to X tons, rising for the fifth year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, imports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 50%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, wallpaper imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +132.2% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 46% of total imports. Uzbekistan (X tons) took a 26% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kyrgyzstan (14%) and Tajikistan (7.6%). The following importers - Turkmenistan (X tons) and Mongolia (X tons) - together made up 7.1% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +14.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Kyrgyzstan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 88% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +27.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Mongolia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
