Walnut Market Size in Central Asia

The Central Asian walnut market expanded remarkably to $X in 2021, surging by 11% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine-year period. Uzbekistan (X tons) remains the largest walnut producing country in Central Asia, comprising approx. 82% of total volume. Moreover, walnut production in Uzbekistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Kyrgyzstan (X tons), eightfold. Kazakhstan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 5.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume in Uzbekistan totaled +5.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kyrgyzstan (+0.4% per year) and Kazakhstan (+4.3% per year).

In 2021, the average walnut yield in Central Asia amounted to X tons per ha, remaining stable against 2020 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 19%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the walnut yield failed to regain momentum. Exports in Central Asia

Walnut exports contracted markedly to X tons in 2021, with a decrease of -20% on the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, saw a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 417%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, walnut exports shrank notably to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 355% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Kyrgyzstan prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 96% of total exports in 2021. Uzbekistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Kyrgyzstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the walnuts exports, with a CAGR of +17.0% from 2012 to 2021. Uzbekistan (-32.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan increased by +31 and +3.1 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kyrgyzstan ($X) remains the largest walnut supplier in Central Asia, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.

Imports in Central Asia

In 2021, the amount of walnuts imported in Central Asia surged to X tons, rising by 32% against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports recorded significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 444% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, walnut imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 325% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

The purchases of the two major importers of walnuts, namely Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, represented more than two-thirds of total import.

The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan amounted to $X per ton.
