For the fifth consecutive year, Central Asia recorded growth in overseas shipments of wheelchairs, which increased by 108% to X units in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 400%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, wheelchair exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 186%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan dominates exports structure, finishing at X units, which was near 96% of total exports in 2021. Kyrgyzstan (X units) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to wheelchair exports from Kazakhstan stood at +61.3%. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+200.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +200.0% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Kyrgyzstan increased by +3.9 percentage points.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest wheelchair supplier in Central Asia, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 0.3% share of total exports.

In 2021, imports of wheelchairs in Central Asia dropped remarkably to X units, waning by -30.9% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 388%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wheelchair imports reduced dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 144% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

In 2021, Kazakhstan (X units) was the main importer of wheelchairs, achieving 60% of total imports. Tajikistan (X units) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X units), Mongolia (X units) and Kyrgyzstan (X units). All these countries together held near 36% share of total imports. Turkmenistan (X units) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to wheelchair imports into Kazakhstan stood at +7.5%. At the same time, Tajikistan (+44.7%), Turkmenistan (+11.6%) and Kyrgyzstan (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tajikistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +44.7% from 2012-2021. Uzbekistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mongolia (-6.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tajikistan (+15 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia saw its share reduced by -2.2%, -2.4% and -18.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wheelchairs in Central Asia, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 9.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with a 5.5% share.

In Kazakhstan, wheelchair imports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uzbekistan (+16.3% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+5.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per unit in 2021, increasing by 11% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 88%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per unit), while Tajikistan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+15.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
