In 2022, overseas shipments of whole fresh milk decreased by -47.8% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a modest increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 55%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, whole fresh milk exports reduced remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a pronounced expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Kazakhstan represented the major exporter of whole fresh milk in Central Asia, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 59% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons), constituting a 39% share of total exports.

In 2022, purchases abroad of whole fresh milk increased by 18% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after five years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt decrease. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The following importers - Tajikistan (X tons) and Turkmenistan (X tons) - each amounted to a 4% share of total imports.

At the same time, Uzbekistan (+181.8%) and Kyrgyzstan (+26.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +181.8% from 2012-2022. Tajikistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Turkmenistan (-7.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kyrgyzstan (+14 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+10 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Kazakhstan (-23.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported whole fresh milk in Central Asia, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 12% share.

In Kazakhstan, whole fresh milk imports decreased by an average annual rate of -9.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kyrgyzstan (+28.8% per year) and Uzbekistan (+181.6% per year).
