Wine Market Size in Central Asia

The Central Asian wine market expanded significantly to $X in 2021, picking up by 9.7% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Wine Production in Central Asia

In value terms, wine production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 24% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Central Asia

In 2021, shipments abroad of wine decreased by -67% to X litres, falling for the fourth consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 5,930% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X litres. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wine exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 1,126%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Uzbekistan dominates exports structure, resulting at X litres, which was approx. 90% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X litres), making up an 8% share of total exports. Kazakhstan (X litres) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to wine exports from Uzbekistan stood at -48.0%. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+18.0%) and Kazakhstan (+6.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +18.0% from 2012-2021. While the share of Uzbekistan (+90 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Kazakhstan (-34.7 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (-55.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) remains the largest wine supplier in Central Asia, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 9.9% share of total exports.

In Uzbekistan, wine exports shrank by an average annual rate of -36.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kyrgyzstan (+12.9% per year) and Kazakhstan (+1.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per litre in 2021, jumping by 104% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 112%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per litre. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per litre), while Uzbekistan ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+21.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, purchases abroad of wine was finally on the rise to reach X litres for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, imports enjoyed slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 132%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X litres. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wine imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed measured growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 104% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan prevails in imports structure, accounting for X litres, which was near 82% of total imports in 2021. Mongolia (X litres) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 7.6% share, followed by Kyrgyzstan (5.8%). Turkmenistan (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Turkmenistan (+23.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkmenistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +23.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mongolia (-3.5%) and Kyrgyzstan (-4.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan increased by +4.1 and +2.5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wine in Central Asia, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mongolia ($X), with a 7.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with a 4.1% share.

In Kazakhstan, wine imports increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mongolia (-0.8% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (-2.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per litre in 2021, growing by 24% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 29%. The level of import peaked at $X per litre in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Kazakhstan ($X per litre) and Mongolia ($X per litre), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per litre) and Turkmenistan ($X per litre) were amongst the lowest.
