In general, exports, however, saw a significant contraction. The volume of export peaked at X cubic meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, exports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a noticeable downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 56% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports of remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan represented the major exporter of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates in Central Asia, with the volume of exports recording X cubic meters, which was near 77% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Tajikistan (X cubic meters), creating a 19% share of total exports. Kyrgyzstan (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates exports from Kazakhstan stood at -25.2%. At the same time, Tajikistan (+491.8%) and Kyrgyzstan (+115.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tajikistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +491.8% from 2012-2021. While the share of Tajikistan (+19 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (+3.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Kazakhstan (-23 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates supplier in Central Asia, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.

In Kazakhstan, exports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates plunged by an average annual rate of -6.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kyrgyzstan (+455.1% per year) and Tajikistan (+749.1% per year).

Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 364%. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per cubic meter), while Tajikistan ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (+158.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Central Asia

In 2021, the amount of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates imported in Central Asia reduced slightly to X cubic meters, remaining stable against 2020 figures. Overall, imports, however, saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 114%. Over the period under review, imports of attained the maximum at X cubic meters in 2020, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

In value terms, imports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 39%. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan prevails in agglomerates structure, accounting for X cubic meters, which was near 79% of total imports in 2021. Kyrgyzstan (X cubic meters) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 6.7% share, followed by Uzbekistan (5.6%) and Tajikistan (4.9%). The following importers - Mongolia (X cubic meters) and Turkmenistan (X cubic meters) - each resulted at a 3.7% share of total imports.

Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+54.7%), Mongolia (+12.2%), Uzbekistan (+6.3%) and Tajikistan (+6.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +54.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Turkmenistan (-3.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kyrgyzstan (+6.4 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+5.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Turkmenistan (-3.6 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (-7.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates in Central Asia, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Kazakhstan totaled +3.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uzbekistan (+14.5% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+59.0% per year).
