Wood Fuel Market Size in Central Asia

The Central Asian wood fuel market dropped modestly to $X in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Wood Fuel Production in Central Asia

In value terms, wood fuel production contracted slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -0.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 24%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Central Asia

Wood fuel exports shrank rapidly to X cubic meters in 2022, with a decrease of -22.2% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 14,667% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X cubic meters in 2021, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, wood fuel exports declined sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 12,594%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Kyrgyzstan (X cubic meters) and Tajikistan (X cubic meters) were the key exporters of wood fuel in 2022, accounting for approx. 45% and 41% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X cubic meters), committing a 15% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Kyrgyzstan (with a CAGR of +58.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Tajikistan ($X) remains the largest wood fuel supplier in Central Asia, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.

In Tajikistan, wood fuel exports expanded at an average annual rate of +19.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uzbekistan (-2.9% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+50.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per cubic meter, dropping by -33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, posted a pronounced increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 48%. The level of export peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per cubic meter), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+11.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Central Asia

Wood fuel imports shrank rapidly to X cubic meters in 2022, falling by -53.5% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 352% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X cubic meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wood fuel imports declined markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 160%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan represented the major importer of wood fuel in Central Asia, with the volume of imports finishing at X cubic meters, which was approx. 82% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tajikistan (X cubic meters), mixing up a 16% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to wood fuel imports into Kazakhstan stood at -1.2%. At the same time, Tajikistan (+62.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tajikistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +62.6% from 2012-2022. While the share of Tajikistan (+16 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Kazakhstan (-15.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wood fuel in Central Asia, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tajikistan ($X), with a 22% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kazakhstan stood at -21.0%.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, picking up by 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 55%. The level of import peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tajikistan ($X per cubic meter), while Kazakhstan amounted to $X per cubic meter.
