Wool Market Size in Central Asia

In 2022, the Central Asian wool market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a pronounced slump. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Wool Production in Central Asia

In value terms, wool production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 36%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Central Asia

In 2022, approx. X tons of wool were exported in Central Asia; falling by -45% against 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a perceptible setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 129% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wool exports fell remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Turkmenistan (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) represented the largest exporters of wool in Central Asia, together reaching approx. 75% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons), together achieving a 25% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +36.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest wool supplying countries in Central Asia were Turkmenistan ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Kazakhstan ($X), together accounting for 96% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +44.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In 2022, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -35.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 65%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+6.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Central Asia

In 2022, overseas purchases of wool decreased by -37.4% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. In general, imports showed a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 117%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wool imports dropped notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 118% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Mongolia represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 85% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), comprising an 11% share of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Mongolia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wool imports, with a CAGR of +25.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+14.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-25.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Mongolia and Uzbekistan increased by +79 and +9.2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Mongolia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wool in Central Asia, comprising 93% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Mongolia amounted to +30.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (-25.0% per year) and Uzbekistan (-6.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -4.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 62%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
