Avocado Market Size in Chile

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Chilean avocado market, when its value decreased by -12.2% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. Avocado consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Avocado Production in Chile

In value terms, avocado production rose sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, the total production indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -6.2% against 2020 indices. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +12.6% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 63% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, avocado exports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate notable growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 90% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons) was the main destination for avocado exports from Chile, accounting for a 38% share of total exports. Moreover, avocado exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Argentina (X tons), twofold. The UK (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the Netherlands stood at +4.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Argentina (+6.6% per year) and the UK (+8.6% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for avocado exported from Chile were the Netherlands ($X), Argentina ($X) and the UK ($X), together accounting for 64% of total exports. China, the United States, Spain and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of avocados decreased by -17.1% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 394%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

In value terms, avocado imports dropped sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 589%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then fell dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Peru (X tons) was the main supplier of avocado to Chile, accounting for a 100% share of total imports. It was followed by Mexico (X kg), with less than 0.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Peru stood at +56.4%.

In value terms, Peru ($X) constituted the largest supplier of avocados to Chile, comprising 100% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mexico ($X), with less than 0.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Peru amounted to +52.7%.

Import Prices by Country

The average avocado import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -34.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 39% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while the price for Peru totaled $X per ton.
