In 2021, shipments abroad of flat-rolled products of iron or non-alloy steel increased by 25% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after four years of decline. Overall, exports, however, showed a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 202%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, flat-rolled steel products exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 227% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Paraguay (X tons) was the main destination for flat-rolled steel products exports from Chile, accounting for a 47% share of total exports. Moreover, flat-rolled steel products exports to Paraguay exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Peru (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Costa Rica (X tons), with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Paraguay amounted to +49.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Peru (+1.1% per year) and Costa Rica (-0.2% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for flat-rolled steel products exported from Chile were Paraguay ($X), Peru ($X) and Costa Rica ($X), together comprising 78% of total exports.

Paraguay, with a CAGR of +61.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average flat-rolled steel products export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 7.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +8.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, flat-rolled steel products export price decreased by -2.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 27% against the previous year. Imports into Chile

In 2021, supplies from abroad of flat-rolled products of iron or non-alloy steel decreased by -1.3% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports recorded a noticeable slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 31%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, flat-rolled steel products imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a mild contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 35%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Brazil (X tons), China (X tons) and Japan (X tons) were the main suppliers of flat-rolled steel products imports to Chile, together comprising 53% of total imports. Spain, the Netherlands, Argentina, the United States and France lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Argentina (with a CAGR of +22.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Brazil ($X), China ($X) and Japan ($X) appeared to be the largest flat-rolled steel products suppliers to Chile, with a combined 57% share of total imports.
