Grapefruit Market Size in Chile

The Chilean grapefruit market skyrocketed to $X in 2022, with an increase of 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 135% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, grapefruit exports expanded to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 120%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Argentina (X tons) was the main destination for grapefruit exports from Chile, accounting for a 87% share of total exports. Moreover, grapefruit exports to Argentina exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Uruguay (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Colombia (X tons), with a 2.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Argentina stood at -4.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uruguay (+7.6% per year) and Colombia (+6.1% per year).

In value terms, Argentina ($X) remains the key foreign market for grapefruits exports from Chile, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uruguay ($X), with a 3.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Ecuador, with a 3.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Argentina totaled -3.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uruguay (+4.0% per year) and Ecuador (+2.0% per year).

In 2022, the average grapefruit export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -12.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2022, supplies from abroad of grapefruits decreased by -80% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 1,046%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, grapefruit imports dropped sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 595% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.
