In value terms, polymer ion-exchangers exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 881% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Colombia (X tons), Peru (X tons) and Jordan (X tons) were the main destinations of polymer ion-exchangers exports from Chile, together comprising 76% of total exports. These countries were followed by the United States, Argentina, Uruguay and Bolivia, which together accounted for a further 24%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the United States (with a CAGR of +60.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bolivia (+2.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Chile

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was decline in overseas purchases of ion-exchangers based on synthetic or natural polymers in primary forms, when their volume decreased by less than 0.1% to X tons. Over the period under review, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +62.3% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 88%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

In value terms, polymer ion-exchangers imports declined remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 120%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2020, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of polymer ion-exchangers to Chile, with a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, polymer ion-exchangers imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X tons), threefold. France (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +26.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+1.0% per year) and France (-10.1% per year).

In 2021, the average polymer ion-exchangers import price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -29.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 37%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+13.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
