Malt Market Size in Chile
In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in the Chilean malt market, when its value decreased by -11.4% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then dropped in the following year.
Malt Production in Chile
In value terms, malt production declined slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 16%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Chile
In 2022, shipments abroad of malt decreased by -93.2% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, exports continue to indicate a dramatic decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 95%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, malt exports fell notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports faced a precipitous setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 85% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Bolivia (X tons) was the main destination for malt exports from Chile, with a 56% share of total exports. Moreover, malt exports to Bolivia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Panama (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Brazil (X tons), with a 5.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Bolivia stood at +28.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Panama (+43.2% per year) and Brazil (+45.4% per year).
In value terms, Bolivia ($X) remains the key foreign market for malt exports from Chile, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Panama ($X), with a 26% share of total exports. It was followed by Brazil, with a 5.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Bolivia stood at +30.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Panama (+41.1% per year) and Brazil (+39.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average malt export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, malt export price increased by +55.1% against 2020 indices. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Colombia ($X per ton) and Peru ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Panama ($X per ton) and Brazil ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ecuador (+4.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Malt Imports
Imports into Chile
After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of malt decreased by -46.5% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 60%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, malt imports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +50.5% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 84% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank notably in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Argentina (X tons) constituted the largest malt supplier to Chile, with a 80% share of total imports. Moreover, malt imports from Argentina exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), fivefold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Argentina amounted to -2.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+118.4% per year) and Germany (+11.8% per year).
In value terms, Argentina ($X) constituted the largest supplier of malt to Chile, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with an 18% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Argentina was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+91.2% per year) and Germany (+13.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average malt import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 23% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
