In 2021, the Chilean phosphorus, arsenic and selenium market increased by 23% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. In value terms, phosphorus, arsenic and selenium exports declined dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports faced a deep setback. Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main destinations of phosphorus, arsenic and selenium exports from Chile.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+4.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2021, purchases abroad of phosphorus, arsenic and selenium decreased by -2.5% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, phosphorus, arsenic and selenium imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 39%. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Vietnam (X tons) constituted the largest phosphorus, arsenic and selenium supplier to Chile, with a 83% share of total imports. Moreover, phosphorus, arsenic and selenium imports from Vietnam exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), eightfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Vietnam totaled +11.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-11.9% per year) and India (+23.4% per year).

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constituted the largest supplier of phosphorus, arsenic and selenium to Chile, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 14% share of total imports.

Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
