Quince Market Size in Chile

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the Chilean quince market, when its value decreased by -35.9% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate significant growth. Quince consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Quince Production in Chile

In value terms, quince production rose slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of quinces in Chile reduced slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, approximately mirroring 2021. Overall, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 4.1% against the previous year. The quince yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then declined in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of quinces production in Chile reduced slightly to X ha, which is down by -2.4% compared with 2021. In general, the harvested area, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 61% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, quince exports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 61%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The United States (X tons) was the main destination for quince exports from Chile, with a 81% share of total exports. Moreover, quince exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X tons), tenfold. Saudi Arabia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United States totaled +5.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (-10.9% per year) and Saudi Arabia (-7.2% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for quinces exports from Chile, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with an 8.2% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 5.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States amounted to +6.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (-6.8% per year) and the Netherlands (-13.8% per year).

In 2022, the average quince export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -12.2% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 20%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+1.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
