Roasted Malt Market Size in Chile

After four years of growth, the Chilean roasted malt market decreased by -17.9% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, roasted malt production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 161% against the previous year. Roasted malt production peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, after three years of decline, there was growth in shipments abroad of roasted malt, when their volume increased by 1.8% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a significant decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 1,358%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, roasted malt exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 810%. The exports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Colombia (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Argentina (X tons) were the main destinations of roasted malt exports from Chile, together comprising 85% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Argentina (with a CAGR of +100.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, Colombia ($X) remains the key foreign market for roasted malt exports from Chile, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Argentina, with a 14% share.

The average roasted malt export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 18% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 65%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ecuador (+7.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Chile

In 2022, roasted malt imports into Chile shrank sharply to X tons, with a decrease of -62% against the year before. Overall, imports, however, posted buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 3,288%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, roasted malt imports reduced dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 1,765% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Belgium (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Peru (X tons) were the main suppliers of roasted malt imports to Chile, with a combined 90% share of total imports. The Netherlands, Italy and Argentina lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 10%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +231.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest roasted malt suppliers to Chile were Germany ($X), Belgium ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together accounting for 94% of total imports. Italy, Peru and Argentina lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 5.8%.

Italy, with a CAGR of +137.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average roasted malt import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 17% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, roasted malt import price increased by +109.7% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average import price increased by 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
