After two years of growth, the Chilean preserved sweet corn market decreased by -32.2% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a strong increase. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

After three years of decline, shipments abroad of sweet corn prepared or preserved increased by 207% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep setback. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, preserved sweet corn exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 178% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Ecuador (X tons) was the main destination for preserved sweet corn exports from Chile, with a 91% share of total exports. Moreover, preserved sweet corn exports to Ecuador exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Bolivia (X tons), tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Ecuador was relatively modest.

In value terms, Ecuador ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for sweet corn prepared or preserved exports from Chile, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bolivia ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Ecuador was relatively modest.

Export Prices by Country

The average preserved sweet corn export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -19.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a pronounced decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average export price increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bolivia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ecuador amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Panama (+16.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Preserved Sweet Corn Imports

Imports into Chile

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of sweet corn prepared or preserved, when their volume decreased by -37.6% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 284% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, preserved sweet corn imports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 152%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Paraguay (X tons) constituted the largest preserved sweet corn supplier to Chile, accounting for a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, preserved sweet corn imports from Paraguay exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), fourfold. Thailand (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Paraguay totaled -19.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+29.9% per year) and Thailand (-1.8% per year).

In value terms, the largest preserved sweet corn suppliers to Chile were Paraguay ($X), Thailand ($X) and China ($X), with a combined 83% share of total imports. Argentina lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 13%.

Among the main suppliers, Argentina, with a CAGR of +222.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average preserved sweet corn import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 29% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible slump. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while the price for Paraguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Paraguay (+46.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
