Watermelon Market Size in Chile
In 2022, the Chilean watermelon market decreased by -1.7% to $X, falling for the third year in a row after four years of growth. For the third year in a row, Chile recorded decline in shipments abroad of watermelons, which decreased by 0% to X kg in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a sharp contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 168%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, watermelon exports amounted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a precipitous descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 218%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands (X kg), Spain (X kg) and Slovenia (X kg) were the main destinations of watermelon exports from Chile, with a combined 67% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +0.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
It was followed by Canada, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Spain was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (-16.5% per year) and Canada (-28.7% per year).

The average watermelon export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a tangible increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 49%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Norway (+9.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Watermelon Imports
Imports into Chile
In 2022, watermelon imports into Chile dropped dramatically to X tons, reducing by -16.4% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 47%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, watermelon imports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 60%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell sharply in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Peru (X tons) was the main supplier of watermelon to Chile, accounting for a 97% share of total imports. Moreover, watermelon imports from Peru exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Brazil (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Peru totaled +11.6%.
In value terms, Peru ($X) constituted the largest supplier of watermelons to Chile, comprising 82% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with an 18% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Peru stood at +15.3%.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average watermelon import price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -23.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 72%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while the price for Peru stood at $X per ton.
