Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the highest price was recorded for prices to Australia ($X per ton) and Thailand ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Nigeria ($X per ton) and the Dominican Republic ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

Imports into China

In 2021, the amount of aluminium bars, rods and profiles imported into China surged to X tons, rising by 42% against 2020. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible curtailment. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, aluminium bar imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Japan (X tons) were the main suppliers of aluminium bar imports to China, with a combined 53% share of total imports. These countries were followed by South Korea, Germany, Thailand, Canada, Singapore and Qatar, which together accounted for a further 30%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +50.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest aluminium bar suppliers to China were the United States ($X), Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) and Japan ($X), together comprising 60% of total imports. These countries were followed by Germany, South Korea, Thailand, Canada, Singapore and Qatar, which together accounted for a further 26%.

Among the main suppliers, Thailand, with a CAGR of +35.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average aluminium bar import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -9.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average import price increased by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Canada ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Qatar (+14.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
