The Chinese biodiesel market expanded remarkably to $X in 2021, surging by 7.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption faced a deep contraction. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

The Netherlands (X tons) was the main destination for biodiesel exports from China, with a 70% share of total exports. The average biodiesel export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 31% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2021, biodiesel imports into China skyrocketed to X tons, increasing by 113% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, imports posted a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 4,767% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, biodiesel imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports posted a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 3,908%. Indonesia (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons) were the main suppliers of biodiesel imports to China, with a combined 98% share of total imports.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
