Bismuth Market Size in China

The Chinese bismuth market shrank to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -13.3% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a prominent increase. Bismuth consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Bismuth Production in China

In value terms, bismuth production rose sharply to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of bismuth increased by 49% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after five years of decline. Overall, total exports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +62.9% against 2019 indices. Germany (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons) were the main destinations of bismuth exports from China, together comprising 57% of total exports. Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Japan, Spain, Belgium, India, Taiwan (Chinese) and France lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Luxembourg (with a CAGR of +150.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), the United States ($X) and Hong Kong SAR ($X) were the largest markets for bismuth exported from China worldwide, together accounting for 59% of total exports. These countries were followed by Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium, Japan, India, Spain, Taiwan (Chinese) and France, which together accounted for a further 33%.

Among the main countries of destination, Luxembourg, with a CAGR of +114.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average bismuth export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a deep setback. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (-9.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into China

In 2021, bismuth imports into China fell rapidly to X tons, shrinking by -18.3% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 188% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, bismuth imports declined slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a mild decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 84% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Canada (X tons) constituted the largest bismuth supplier to China, accounting for a 84% share of total imports. Moreover, bismuth imports from Canada exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), more than tenfold. Japan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Canada stood at +263.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (+13.3% per year) and Japan (-7.2% per year).

In value terms, Canada ($X), Japan ($X) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) appeared to be the largest bismuth suppliers to China, together accounting for 88% of total imports. The United States, Malaysia and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 5.4%.

Among the main suppliers, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +428.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average bismuth import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 20% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average import price increased by 48% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the price for South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
