Cassava Market Size in China

In 2022, the Chinese cassava market increased by 18% to $X, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, the total consumption indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +85.6% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, cassava production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, the total production indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +1.3% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 65%. In 2022, shipments abroad of cassava increased by 16% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cassava exports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 77% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons) was the main destination for cassava exports from China, accounting for a 6.2% share of total exports. Moreover, cassava exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Poland (X tons), tenfold. The UK (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 0.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Netherlands amounted to -12.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (0.0% per year) and the UK (-0.5% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for cassava exports from China, comprising 6.2% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 1% share of total exports. It was followed by Australia, with a 0.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the Netherlands amounted to -11.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (0.0% per year) and Australia (+2.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average cassava export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -3.7% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cassava export price increased by +3.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 58% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ireland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+16.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, purchases abroad of cassava increased by 29% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 65%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cassava imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed modest growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 96% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Thailand (X tons) was the main cassava supplier to China, accounting for a 91% share of total imports. Moreover, cassava imports from Thailand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Vietnam (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Thailand stood at +2.9%.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cassava to China, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with an 8.2% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Thailand amounted to +4.1%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average cassava import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 3.2% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average import price increased by 32%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while the price for Thailand stood at $X per ton.
