Common Clay Market Size in China

The Chinese common clay market fell to $X in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Common Clay Production in China

In value terms, common clay production contracted modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports from China

After two years of growth, overseas shipments of common clay decreased by -43.8% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 37%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, common clay exports fell significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Vietnam (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons) were the main destinations of common clay exports from China, with a combined 57% share of total exports. Japan, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Singapore, Egypt, Australia, Malaysia and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Singapore (with a CAGR of +108.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Bangladesh ($X) and South Korea ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for common clay exported from China worldwide, together comprising 46% of total exports. Indonesia, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Egypt, Australia and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 36%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Singapore, with a CAGR of +108.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average common clay export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+21.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Common Clay Imports

Imports into China

In 2022, approx. X tons of common clay were imported into China; waning by -69.9% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 153% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell sharply in the following year.

In value terms, common clay imports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 62% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Thailand (X tons), the UK (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main suppliers of common clay imports to China, with a combined 79% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +22.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($X) constituted the largest supplier of common clay to China, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with an 8.4% share.
