Coffee Extract Market Size in China

The Chinese coffee extract market dropped modestly to $X in 2021, declining by -3.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, posted a strong increase. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Coffee Extract Production in China

In value terms, coffee extract production dropped slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 55%. Coffee extract production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports from China

In 2021, overseas shipments of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates increased by 11% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 71%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, coffee extract exports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 125% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Malaysia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main destinations of coffee extract exports from China, together comprising 41% of total exports. These countries were followed by the Philippines, Myanmar, South Korea and Finland, which together accounted for a further 21%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Finland (with a CAGR of +161.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the key foreign market for coffee extracts, essences and concentrates exports from China, comprising 23% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 9.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Malaysia totaled +18.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+20.7% per year) and Vietnam (+12.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average coffee extract export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -4.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 59% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+23.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into China

In 2021, the amount of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates imported into China rose rapidly to X tons, picking up by 7% against 2020. In general, imports showed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 87%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, coffee extract imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 80% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Malaysia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Japan (X tons) were the main suppliers of coffee extract imports to China, together comprising 77% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Japan (with a CAGR of +38.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest coffee extract suppliers to China were Malaysia ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Japan ($X), together comprising 68% of total imports.

Japan, with a CAGR of +32.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average coffee extract import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 23% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+2.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
