In 2021, purchases abroad of dog and cat food decreased by -8.7% to X tons for the first time since 2014, thus ending a six-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 108% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, dog and cat food imports shrank to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 186%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

In 2021, Canada (X tons) constituted the largest dog and cat food supplier to China, with a 47% share of total imports. Moreover, dog and cat food imports from Canada exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Thailand (X tons), with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Canada stood at +187.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+75.4% per year) and New Zealand (+121.4% per year).
