Candied Fruit Market Size in China

In 2021, the Chinese candied fruit market decreased by -1.2% to $X for the first time since 2013, thus ending a seven-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, showed a prominent expansion. Candied fruit consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Candied Fruit Production in China

In value terms, candied fruit production shrank slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +85.5% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 14% against the previous year. Candied fruit production peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

In 2021, overseas shipments of candied fruits increased by 6.7% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 7.9% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, candied fruit exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 13%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Japan (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) were the main destinations of candied fruit exports from China, with a combined 48% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Russia, Hong Kong SAR, Kazakhstan, Taiwan (Chinese), Ukraine, South Korea, the UK, India, Germany and the Netherlands, which together accounted for a further 36%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Kazakhstan (with a CAGR of +89.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for candied fruit exported from China were Thailand ($X), Japan ($X) and Malaysia ($X), together comprising 48% of total exports. Russia, Kazakhstan, Hong Kong SAR, Taiwan (Chinese), the UK, Ukraine, India, the Netherlands, South Korea and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.

Kazakhstan, with a CAGR of +108.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average candied fruit export price amounted to $X per ton, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 9.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Thailand (+12.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Candied Fruit Imports

Imports into China

For the tenth consecutive year, China recorded growth in supplies from abroad of candied fruits, which increased by 32% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 196% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, candied fruit imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 116% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Cambodia (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of candied fruit to China, with a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, candied fruit imports from Cambodia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Vietnam (X tons), with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Cambodia stood at +203.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+39.9% per year) and Vietnam (+211.3% per year).

In value terms, Cambodia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of candied fruit to China, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Cambodia totaled +199.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+35.2% per year) and Vietnam (+187.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average candied fruit import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 18%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+11.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
