Durum Wheat Market Size in China

The Chinese durum wheat market dropped to $X in 2022, waning by -6.4% against the previous year. In general, the total consumption indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -11.1% against 2019 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Durum Wheat Production in China

In value terms, durum wheat production dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed moderate growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 89%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The average yield of durum wheat in China shrank slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the yield increased by 3.9% against the previous year. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 514%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, durum wheat exports contracted significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 265%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

France (X tons) was the main destination for durum wheat exports from China, accounting for a 27% share of total exports. Moreover, durum wheat exports to France exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Spain (X tons), twofold. Canada (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 1.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to France amounted to +13.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (0.0% per year) and Canada (+16.3% per year).

In value terms, France ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for durum wheat exports from China, comprising 35% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 1.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to France was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (0.0% per year) and Germany (+117.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average durum wheat export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 41% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 187%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+21.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into China

In 2022, purchases abroad of durum wheat decreased by -47.5% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 120%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, durum wheat imports reduced remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 114%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Canada (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of durum wheat to China, accounting for a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, durum wheat imports from Canada exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Australia (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Canada totaled +16.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Australia (+25.4% per year) and the United States (-12.7% per year).

In value terms, Canada ($X) constituted the largest supplier of durum wheat to China, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Australia ($X), with a 24% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Canada stood at +17.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Australia (+28.1% per year) and the United States (-10.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average durum wheat import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, durum wheat import price increased by +51.7% against 2020 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Australia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
