In 2021, the Chinese fluorspar market decreased by -10% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of fluorspar, when their volume decreased by -14.1% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 197%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, fluorspar imports fell to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 229% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Mongolia (X tons) constituted the largest fluorspar supplier to China, accounting for a 72% share of total imports. Moreover, fluorspar imports from Mongolia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Africa (X tons), sevenfold. Mexico (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Mongolia totaled +16.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (+539.9% per year) and Mexico (+229.0% per year).

In value terms, Mongolia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of fluorspar to China, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Mexico, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Mongolia amounted to +15.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (+403.0% per year) and Mexico (+205.7% per year).

In 2021, the average fluorspar import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 2.2% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 14% against the previous year.
