Fructose Market Size in China
The Chinese fructose market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after four years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Fructose Production in China
In value terms, fructose production rose rapidly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 33%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports from China
In 2021, shipments abroad of fructose and fructose syrup decreased by -29.3% to X tons, falling for the fourth year in a row after six years of growth. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a measured expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 42% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, fructose exports contracted to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Indonesia (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) were the main destinations of fructose exports from China, together comprising 43% of total exports. Vietnam, Malaysia, South Korea, Australia, Singapore, Taiwan (Chinese), the United States, Hong Kong SAR, Peru and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 42%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Malaysia (with a CAGR of +13.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for fructose exported from China were Indonesia ($X), the Philippines ($X) and South Korea ($X), together accounting for 36% of total exports. These countries were followed by Thailand, Malaysia, the United States, Vietnam, Australia, Taiwan (Chinese), Hong Kong SAR, Singapore, Russia and Peru, which together accounted for a further 44%.
Malaysia, with a CAGR of +14.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average fructose export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 37% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+9.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Fructose Imports
Imports into China
After four years of growth, supplies from abroad of fructose and fructose syrup decreased by -37.2% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 681%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, fructose imports dropped markedly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 377%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped markedly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Thailand (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of fructose to China, accounting for a 72% share of total imports. Moreover, fructose imports from Thailand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Vietnam (X tons), sixfold. Malaysia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Thailand totaled +138.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+298.5% per year) and Malaysia (+35.2% per year).
In value terms, Thailand ($X) constituted the largest supplier of fructose and fructose syrup to China, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Thailand amounted to +117.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+271.4% per year) and Malaysia (+25.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average fructose import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per ton), while the price for Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+4.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
