In 2021, the Chinese market for drawn glass and blown glass decreased by -0.5% to $X for the first time since 2011, thus ending a nine-year rising trend. In general, consumption enjoyed a strong expansion. Drawn glass and blown glass consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, drawn glass and blown glass production fell modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Vietnam (X square meters) was the main destination for drawn glass and blown glass exports from China, with a 28% share of total exports. Moreover, drawn glass and blown glass exports to Vietnam exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, India (X square meters), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Pakistan (X square meters), with a 6.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Vietnam amounted to +5.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (-30.5% per year) and Pakistan (-16.9% per year).
In value terms, India ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Pakistan ($X) constituted the largest markets for drawn glass and blown glass exported from China worldwide, with a combined 23% share of total exports. The Philippines, Ghana, South Africa, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Madagascar, Myanmar, Liberia, Sierra Leone and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Cambodia, with a CAGR of +44.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average export price for drawn glass and blown glass amounted to $X per square meter, increasing by 42% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 109% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per square meter), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ghana (+45.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Drawn Glass And Blown Glass
Imports into China
For the third consecutive year, China recorded decline in overseas purchases of drawn glass and blown glass, which decreased by -15.2% to X square meters in 2021. Over the period under review, imports faced a sharp curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 322%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X square meters in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, drawn glass and blown glass imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a sharp decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 105%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X square meters) was the main supplier of drawn glass and blown glass to China, with a 93% share of total imports. Moreover, drawn glass and blown glass imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (X square meters), more than tenfold. Japan (X square meters) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 0.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany amounted to +12.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (-30.5% per year) and Japan (-56.1% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of drawn glass and blown glass to China, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Korea ($X), with a 2.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Japan, with a 1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Germany totaled +6.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (-38.2% per year) and Japan (-58.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average import price for drawn glass and blown glass stood at $X per square meter in 2021, which is down by -11.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per square meter in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per square meter), while the price for Germany ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (-1.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
