Grape Market Size in China
The Chinese grape market expanded notably to $X in 2022, rising by 5.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. In 2022, the amount of grapes exported from China stood at X tons, with an increase of 7.6% on 2021. Overall, exports recorded resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 113% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, grape exports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 112% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Thailand (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) were the main destinations of grape exports from China, together comprising 74% of total exports. The Philippines, Bangladesh, Malaysia, India and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Philippines (with a CAGR of +43.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for grape exported from China were Thailand ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Indonesia ($X), with a combined 76% share of total exports. The Philippines, Bangladesh, Malaysia, India and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.
India, with a CAGR of +40.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average grape export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -10.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 31% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bangladesh ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+9.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Grape Imports
Imports into China
For the third consecutive year, China recorded decline in overseas purchases of grapes, which decreased by -7.2% to X tons in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -28.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, grape imports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Chile (X tons), Peru (X tons) and Australia (X tons) were the main suppliers of grape imports to China, together accounting for 94% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Australia (with a CAGR of +30.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, Peru ($X), Chile ($X) and Australia ($X) constituted the largest grape suppliers to China, with a combined 94% share of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, Australia, with a CAGR of +33.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Import Prices by Country
The average grape import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 6.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 18%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
