Hemp Tow Market Size in China

The Chinese hemp tow market fell slightly to $X in 2022, shrinking by -1.9% against the previous year. In general, consumption enjoyed resilient growth. Hemp tow consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of hemp tow, when their volume decreased by -42.6% to X tons. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell significantly in the following year.

In value terms, hemp tow exports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 227%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Pakistan (X tons) was the main destination for hemp tow exports from China, with a 53% share of total exports. Moreover, hemp tow exports to Pakistan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Japan (X tons), fourfold. Tunisia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Pakistan amounted to +64.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (-0.9% per year) and Tunisia (0.0% per year).

In value terms, Pakistan ($X) remains the key foreign market for hemp tow exports from China, comprising 39% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Japan, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Pakistan stood at +152.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (0.0% per year) and Japan (-0.1% per year).

In 2022, the average hemp tow export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 22% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a mild increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 41% against the previous year. Hemp tow imports into China soared to X tons in 2022, jumping by 58% compared with 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 2,316%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, hemp tow imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 611% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
