Canned Meat Market Size in China
The Chinese canned meat market dropped slightly to $X in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a buoyant increase. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Canned Meat Production in China
In value terms, canned meat production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -0.3% against 2017 indices. From 2018 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of canned meat was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a mild setback. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, canned meat exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a noticeable setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Japan (X tons) was the main destination for canned meat exports from China, with a 58% share of total exports. Moreover, canned meat exports to Japan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X tons), tenfold. The UK (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Japan totaled -2.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+17.9% per year) and the UK (+6.3% per year).
In value terms, Japan ($X) remains the key foreign market for canned meat exports from China, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 4.8% share of total exports. It was followed by the UK, with a 2.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Japan amounted to -4.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+15.4% per year) and the UK (+1.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average canned meat export price amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 6.5%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+3.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into China
In 2021, imports of canned meat into China contracted rapidly to X tons, declining by -23.8% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 1,947%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, canned meat imports contracted notably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 911%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Mongolia (X tons) was the main canned meat supplier to China, with a 97% share of total imports. It was followed by Denmark (X tons), with a 2.2% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Mongolia totaled +112.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Denmark (+55.1% per year) and the United States (-41.7% per year).
In value terms, Mongolia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of canned meat to China, comprising 95% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Denmark ($X), with a 3.7% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Mongolia amounted to +110.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Denmark (+48.7% per year) and the United States (-41.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average canned meat import price amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 190%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Mongolia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
