Hop Market Size in China

The Chinese hop market reached $X in 2022, surging by 1.6% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Hop Production in China

In value terms, hop production expanded to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a measured increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 97% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. In value terms, hop exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 125% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Russia (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Romania (X tons) were the main destinations of hop exports from China, with a combined 86% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +37.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, hop export price increased by +62.3% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Kazakhstan ($X per ton) and Japan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Romania ($X per ton) and Russia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kyrgyzstan (+10.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into China

In 2022, imports of hops into China expanded slightly to X tons, picking up by 1.9% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hop imports amounted to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 68%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of hop to China, with a 52% share of total imports. Moreover, hop imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X tons), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany amounted to +18.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+15.9% per year) and Slovenia (-13.2% per year).
