In 2022, overseas shipments of household refrigerators and freezers (not combined) decreased by -21.5% to X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, recorded a noticeable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X units in 2021, and then fell notably in the following year.
In value terms, non-combined refrigerator-freezer exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then declined sharply in the following year.
Exports by Country
The United States (X units) was the main destination for non-combined refrigerator-freezer exports from China, accounting for a 29% share of total exports. Moreover, non-combined refrigerator-freezer exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X units), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was held by the UK (X units), with a 5.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United States amounted to +6.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+1.5% per year) and the UK (+1.3% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for household refrigerators and freezers (not combined) exports from China, comprising 26% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 5.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Japan, with a 4.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States totaled +6.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+2.6% per year) and Japan (+0.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average non-combined refrigerator-freezer export price amounted to $X per unit, rising by 3.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 20%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to the UK ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+4.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into China
In 2022, imports of household refrigerators and freezers (not combined) into China soared to X units, jumping by 78% on the previous year. In general, imports saw a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 80%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, non-combined refrigerator-freezer imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Germany (X units), Spain (X units) and Turkey (X units) were the main suppliers of non-combined refrigerator-freezer imports to China, together comprising 72% of total imports. Bulgaria, Serbia, the United States, Italy, Japan, South Korea and India lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +182.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of household refrigerators and freezers (not combined) to China, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Germany totaled +24.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+83.0% per year) and the United States (+1.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average non-combined refrigerator-freezer import price stood at $X per unit in 2022, dropping by -22.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 50%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per unit), while the price for India ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
