Hydrogen Fluoride Market Size in China

For the third year in a row, the Chinese hydrogen fluoride market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -1% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Hydrogen fluoride consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hydrogen fluoride production expanded markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, shipments abroad of hydrogen fluoride (hydrofluoric acid) was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 82%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hydrogen fluoride exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, total exports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 44%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

South Korea (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) were the main destinations of hydrogen fluoride exports from China, together comprising 68% of total exports. Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Brazil and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +34.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Japan ($X), South Korea ($X) and Thailand ($X) constituted the largest markets for hydrogen fluoride exported from China worldwide, with a combined 70% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Brazil, Indonesia and the United States, which together accounted for a further 11%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +36.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average hydrogen fluoride export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 21% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 52% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, overseas purchases of hydrogen fluoride (hydrofluoric acid) were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, imports saw a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 91%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hydrogen fluoride imports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 76%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Korea (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of hydrogen fluoride to China, with a 42% share of total imports. Moreover, hydrogen fluoride imports from South Korea exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Japan (X tons), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from South Korea totaled +27.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (+13.5% per year) and the United States (-37.1% per year).

In value terms, South Korea ($X) constituted the largest supplier of hydrogen fluoride (hydrofluoric acid) to China, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a 16% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from South Korea totaled +29.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (+15.4% per year) and the United States (-4.2% per year).

In 2021, the average hydrogen fluoride import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 4.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 25%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
