In 2021, exports of industrial robots for multiple uses from China skyrocketed to X units, jumping by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 46%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
In value terms, industrial robot exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a strong expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Japan (X units), Thailand (X units) and Germany (X units) were the main destinations of industrial robot exports from China, with a combined 28% share of total exports. South Korea, Hong Kong SAR, Vietnam, the United States, Taiwan (Chinese), India, Malaysia, Russia, the UK and Australia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 47%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +42.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for industrial robot exported from China were South Korea ($X), Germany ($X) and Thailand ($X), with a combined 28% share of total exports. Vietnam, Taiwan (Chinese), Japan, the United States, Hong Kong SAR, India, Malaysia, Australia, the UK and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 43%.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +35.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average industrial robot export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 9% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Russia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+0.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into China
For the sixth consecutive year, China recorded growth in overseas purchases of industrial robots for multiple uses, which increased by 63% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed strong growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, industrial robot imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +53.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 51% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Japan (X units) constituted the largest industrial robot supplier to China, accounting for a 86% share of total imports. Moreover, industrial robot imports from Japan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X units), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Germany (X units), with a 3.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Japan amounted to +20.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+28.2% per year) and Germany (-11.1% per year).
In value terms, Japan ($X) constituted the largest supplier of industrial robots for multiple uses to China, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 7% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 5.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Japan totaled +12.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-8.1% per year) and France (+27.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average industrial robot import price stood at $X per unit in 2021, falling by -9.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 3%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per unit), while the price for Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (+4.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
