The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 152% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X cubic meters. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, industrial roundwood (coniferous) exports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 100% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Exports by Country
The United States (X cubic meters) was the main destination for industrial roundwood (coniferous) exports from China, accounting for a 19% share of total exports. Moreover, industrial roundwood (coniferous) exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Singapore (X cubic meters), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Japan (X cubic meters), with a 1.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United States stood at +23.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (+47.7% per year) and Japan (-5.3% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for industrial roundwood (coniferous) exports from China, comprising 26% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a 7.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 0.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to the United States totaled +31.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (+13.1% per year) and Singapore (+35.3% per year).

Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 124%. After six years of growth, overseas purchases of industrial roundwood (coniferous) decreased by -38.5% to X cubic meters in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a mild descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 31%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X cubic meters in 2021, and then declined markedly in the following year.
In value terms, industrial roundwood (coniferous) imports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 45%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then declined notably in the following year.

In 2022, New Zealand (X cubic meters) constituted the largest supplier of industrial roundwood (coniferous) to China, with a 43% share of total imports. Moreover, industrial roundwood (coniferous) imports from New Zealand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X cubic meters), threefold. In value terms, New Zealand ($X) constituted the largest supplier of industrial roundwood (coniferous) to China, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 7.5% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 4.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from New Zealand totaled +8.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+93.3% per year) and the Netherlands (+160.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average industrial roundwood (coniferous) import price amounted to $X per cubic meter, with an increase of 6.2% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 44%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per cubic meter), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
