Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

South Korea (X tons) was the main destination for lithium carbonate exports from China, accounting for a 61% share of total exports. From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to South Korea totaled +47.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (+14.4% per year) and Turkey (+89.3% per year).

The average lithium carbonate export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 57% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate strong growth. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. For the third year in a row, China recorded growth in overseas purchases of lithium carbonates, which increased by 61% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 111% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, lithium carbonate imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports posted significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 228% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Chile (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of lithium carbonate to China, with a 79% share of total imports. Moreover, lithium carbonate imports from Chile exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Argentina (X tons), fourfold.

The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
